Alexandre Gabriel

Maison Ferrand
President and Owner
Cognac, France

Alexandre Gabriel was born and raised in France, on a farm in southern Burgundy near the medieval town of Cluny, where his grandfather taught him how to make wine and distill spirits. Twenty-five years ago Alexandre Gabriel came upon an ancient Cognac house and built it into what is known today as Maison Ferrand, in the heart of the Grande Champagne district of Cognac.  Through his passion and vision, Alexandre turned the small Cognac House into one of the greatest specialist of artisanal spirits today, producing an award-winning portfolio of sought after brands. Of the spirits he produces, Alexandre says he thinks of them as “aromatic sculptures” or “gastronomic paintings” and to him they are not merely products but the perfect embodiment of history, emotions and experience.

Alexandre’s passion for creating exquisite spirits is boundless and the fruits of his labor are appreciated by many, whether bartenders or fine spirit aficionados. He has looked to the past to create spirits for the future that include: Pierre Ferrand Cognac and Pierre Ferrand 1840 Original Formula Cognac the 2012 Tales of the Cocktail Spirit Award winner for Best New Product; Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, a traditional French Orange Curacao based on a 19th century recipe and winner of Spirit of the Year  Award at 2012 Bar Covent; Citadelle Gin and barrel-aged Citadelle Gin Reserve, winner of the 2012 Gin Grand Master Award from The Spirit Business; Plantation Rum portfolio, double-aged in Cognac casks according to a special technique developed by Alexandre and winner of the most RumXP Awards medals in one year (2012, 9 medals); and Mathilde Liqueurs, a collection of all-natural fruit infusion liqueurs.  In 2012, Alexandre was named world’s best Rum Master Blender at the prestigious UK RumFest Golden Barrel Awards.

Alexandre is currently completing a book on French Geniêvre and the evolution of its distillation techniques throughout time. He has conducted extensive research on the 19th century Cognac blending and aging techniques and consults with spirits companies in France, India, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.  Alexandre has been referred to as the “Spirits Master” and has been quoted in numerous publications including the New York Times, Forbes, The Robb Report and GQ. He lives in Cognac and Paris, France with his family.

“We are artisans of spirited pleasure. Our job at Maison Ferrand is to make your taste buds sing.”
