Alex Gregg, one of Houston’s most educated and creative cocktail minds, emerged as a major player on the City’s cocktail scene in 2010 at the newly opened Anvil Bar & Refuge. There he dazzled customers and critics alike with his culinary approach to cocktails and his attention to customer service, a skill he had acquired while honing his craft at upscale Houston restaurants like Brennan’s and Branchwater Tavern.
While at Anvil he racked up critical and competition success – in 2011 the Houston Press named Gregg “Houston’s Best Bartender,” calling him the “epitome of the classic bartender archetype.” That same year he won the Houston stage at the prestigious Bombay Sapphire and GQ Magazine cocktail contest, earning the opportunity to compete in the national finals in Las Vegas.
Alex left Anvil to pursue other opportunities, developing a “Commercial Free” Wednesday night promotion at Grand Prize Bar that drew a fiercely loyal crowd of chefs, bartenders and other industry professionals as well as food media. His next move was to create the bar program at the The Pass and Provisions, a restaurant that takes its spirits as seriously as its 4 star menu.
It was around this time that Grand Prize owners Brad Moore and Ryan Rouse along with Josh Martinez approached Gregg to head up the bar program at their about-to-be-launched downtown restaurant Goro & Gun. At Goro, Gregg has pushed the boundaries of production techniques, spending a lot of time in the kitchen where he has developed a selection of house made bitters, countless syrups as well as infusions for use in his cocktails. In March, 2014 Texas Monthly magazine named Goro & Gun as one of the 10 Best New Bars in the state, noting that its cocktails “are prepared with academic rigor.”
Sadly, Goro and Gun closed in September 2014. This disappointment proved beneficial for Gregg as he was offered the opportunity to open his own bar as a full partner in the former Goro space. The Houston Press named Moving Sidewalk “Best Bar” in 2015.
