In the 1860s, when Italy began exporting its vermouth to the United States, this new ingredient changed the way Americans drink, and quickly—by 1885, the Manhattan and the Martini were beginning their long reign as the king and queen of American mixed drinks and vermouth was everywhere. But the encounter with American markets and the Americans’ unique ways with mixed drinks radically changed Italian drinking as well. Please join renowned cocktail Historian David Wondrich in a characteristically detailed but lively and anecdotal exploration of both sides of this exchange between cultures. Both cocktails and aperitivi will be served.
